The prevailing thought has always been that the book is always better than the film adaptation.
There are a few interesting reasons behind this. For one, when reading a book, people’s imaginations are at work. They are the ones that construct the characters, the world, the action. In movies, it rarely lives up to the awesomeness you’ve played it up to in your head.
However, there is still something special and exciting about seeing a science fiction book come to life on the silver screen. With how grandiose and fantastic science fiction can get, it is just interesting to see how it will all look and be presented in a movie.
Without further ado, here are two sci-fi book to movie adaptations that you should be excited for.
Frank Herbert’s Dune
Frank Herbert’s Dune is an amazing book series. It has a deep story that is jam-packed with good stories, characters, turmoil, struggle, and philosophy. It is considered to be one of the greatest works of science fiction.
In the book, the universe is controlled by the spice melange. The galactic emperor rules over all. However, when he hears that a leader of a house is coming for his throne, venom and spite form into twisted plans of double-cross that will make you remember Game of Thrones.
The story centers around Paul Atreides, a special boy who has been trained since birth and holds a special place in the coming history of the universe. Will he play the savior or spoiler of civilization?
There was a movie done previously by David Lynch. However, there is a remake ramping up. Denis Villeneuve has pioneered many great modern science fiction films such as Arrival and the new Blade Runner.
It is exciting to see how Villeneuve takes control of Dune’s intricate and interesting world and shapes it for the silver screen. As of now, there is no news as to when the film will be released.
Ernest Cline’s Armada
Hot off Ready Player One’s cinematic release, studios have greenlit Ernest Cline’s second book Armada.
In the book, a child is playing his video game. Nothing out of the ordinary there right? Soon though, he realizes that the game is a simulator that is training him to stave off an alien invasion. The deeper he gets into the game, the more secrets he finds out.
Universal Pictures has procured the rights for this film almost 7 years ago. They have greenlit it and development has already started.
These are only a few science fiction books that will be made into movies. Whether you prefer the book or the film, the Eastercon 2017 team hopes that you do go see the movie.
Who knows? One of these days, the movie might just surprise you.
