Some see fiction as a trivial pursuit, preferring to read books that are anchored or pertain to reality. However, fiction – and more importantly science fiction – is important precisely because it is not based on reality.
The imaginary nature of science fiction allows people to look beyond the problems that people face today. It may take from what is happening right now, but in doing so, takes the current events and problems to a time and place that allows for the evolution and resolution of these conundrums.
The fact this fiction is based on science lends even greater credence to the works and their ability to be relevant to today’s society. When people look at science fiction, it allows them to imagine a world wherein these things can actually happen.
Not all science fiction is as idealistic though. Science is objective, and thus also allows for the interpretation of a world that is far from ideal. In this case, people can see this and work towards avoiding it.
In any case, science fiction is just a marvelous and fun piece of work.
This is what most of the Eastercon 2017 team believe and live by. As such, the team has decided to come together and write about science fiction’s importance and impact in our lives.
